Through the church door people of every generation have come to celebrate new life, to honour and bury the dead, to give thanks for the harvest, to meet in times of rejoicing, and to pray for peace in time of conflict. Here, for more than a thousand years, the round of the great Christian festivals has been marked, and here, week by week, in numbers large and small, have come Christians to express in word and sacrament the truths of the Faith of which the building is the symbol and reassurance for many residents. Today St Andrew's Church stands as a high focal point above the Village Green where roads from many directions meet and in picturesque proximity to grand houses and humbler cottages, the pub and the school. Visitors from the USA to Wickhambreaux Church have been, and surely will in future be interested to know that the great east window was dedicated in 1896 to the memory of Harriet Duer Gallatin by her son Count James Gallatin of New York. It was in New York that the design was first exhibited, and where it attracted great attention. The Gallatin family came originally from Savoy, and Harriet Gallatin's husband's grandfather, Albert Gallatin was born in Geneva in 1761. |
